Heart of the Metro

Heart of the Metro

An extremely dense program squeezed in a plot with half of the required size resulted in the first Depot in the world with two floors for train stabling. EB/Architects successfully accommodated the challenging design requirements of the new Metro Depot Complex in Salonica.

Salonica Metro Depot Complex in Pylea

The Depot complex in Pylea will be the heart of the Salonica Metro network, housing administration, operations control, stabling, workshops, maintenance, painting, cleaning, and several other supporting activities.

Built in a relatively small plot it will be the first facility of its kind to host train stabling in two overlapping levels.

EB/Architects' scope in this project was to develop the architectural preliminary design to the Detailed Design status.

A big challenge during this development was to preserve the functional principles and layout of volumes defined in the original concept whilst resolving complicated operational requirements, adding new facilities to address program updates, incorporating security related elements, and successfully addressing a multi-layered interoperability matrix.

The aesthetic identity of the depot complex was also defined in this stage, with the introduction of a common morphological syntax characterized by the composition of volumes with bold, curved profiles either in horizontal or in vertical section.

The main materials used were fairfaced concrete, aluminum curtain walls, composite aluminum paneling, and steel roofing elements. Vivid colors were applied to enhance the articulation of volumes and to emphasize the compositional clarity.
