Refurbishment and Expansion of Skiathos International Airport

The refurbishment and expansion of the existing two terminals of the International Airport of Skiathos was part of an ambitious project for the Upgrade, Maintenance, Management and Operation of 14 Regional Airports in Greece. The biggest challenge through the design progress was to combine a complicated program, the upgraded security requirements, the budget and time related restrictions as well as the need to aesthetically merge the required additions with the existing Old Terminal opened in 1971 and the New Terminal Building constructed in 2002.

Construction phasing was similarly critical. The facility has been designed in such manner to facilitate uninterrupted operation throughout the construction period, a really challenging exercise should one consider that security and other passenger flow processes had to be re-adjusted to several room layout options.

At the final phase Skiathos Airport is able to serve 505 passengers at peak hour, with 10 check-in counters, 3 Schengen, 1 non-Schengen and one Swing Gate Lounge, and a total area of 637sq.m for retail and F&B facilities.
