On the historic Asteria Glyfadas shoreline of the Athens Riviera, EB/Architects transform the rhythm of the old beach cabins into a calm array of seafront arches and pools, giving MANKO a new Athenian home between city and sea.
moreThe Manko Athens specialty restaurant and private club forms one of the key waterfront destinations within the redevelopment of the historic Asteria Glyfadas resort, today One&Only Aesthesis in Glyfada, Athens. EB/Architects were commissioned to design the architectural concept and building envelope for the new beachside venue, reconstructing the existing structures within strict coastal and archaeological constraints while opening the complex towards the sea and organising a sequence of pools and water features between building and beach.
The design reinterprets the modernist language of the original Asteria facilities. Low linear volumes are opened towards the views, generous pergolas, bi-fold glazing and timber elements dissolve the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, so dining rooms, lounge areas, pools and beach terraces read as a single continuous landscape.
At the heart of the composition is the beachfront canopy, formed by a series of sculpted umbrella columns and shallow domes that echo the historic arches of the resort. Developed with both aesthetic form and structural integrity in mind, this umbrella-like system solves span, shade and drainage in one family of elements, maximising free height and usable space below while preserving unbroken views to the sea.
The architectural scheme was deliberately kept neutral and unpretentious, conceived as a flexible canvas for the operator’s interior world. EB/Architects delivered the full “cold shell” scope, from concept through detailed and construction design and site support, including full coordination with structural, MEP and interior requirements. Within this framework, the interior fit-out, FF&E and scenography for Manko Athens were developed by the collaborating studios MVP Architectes and Bureau Lacroix for One&Only Aesthesis and the Manko brand, building on the architectural structure and spatial framework set by EB/Architects.
