A protected educational environment within a dense urban setting. Organized around an inner courtyard, the school brings daylight, outdoor play and visual continuity into the everyday life of a compact public kindergarten.
moreThe 91st Public Kindergarten of Athens is a new two-class all-day public kindergarten located on Mithymnis Street, near Plateia Amerikis, in the 6th Municipal District of Athens. The project occupies a compact urban plot with limited street frontage, responding to the dense city fabric while creating a calm and protected environment for early education.
The architectural proposal turns the school inward, organising the programme in a Π-shaped plan around the courtyard. This layout allows the classrooms and shared spaces to benefit from southern orientation, while creating a strong visual and functional connection between interior learning areas and outdoor play.
The entrance sequence is defined by the ramp along Mithymnis Street, which leads from the pavement level to the main school level. This ramp becomes the main architectural gesture of the façade, forming a clear public edge while protecting the kindergarten from the intensity of the surrounding urban environment. Its rhythmic screening elements give depth and movement to the street elevation.
Internally, the multipurpose hall, dining area, teachers' office and support spaces are placed close to the entrance, while the classrooms are arranged around the courtyard. A corridor continues the connection between these spaces and leads to the rest area, secondary sanitary facilities and the second exit. The result is a compact plan with clear circulation, easy supervision and a direct relationship between learning, play and rest.
The building is developed over a ground floor and basement. The basement accommodates parking, auxiliary spaces, storage and mechanical installations, while the roof integrates photovoltaic panels and mechanical equipment. Planting within the open areas contributes to the quality of the microenvironment and softens the relationship between the building and its dense urban surroundings.
EB/Architects developed the project from concept to construction documentation, including architectural design, interior design, landscape design and BIM-based coordination. The project was also presented through virtual reality at the KTYP pavilion during the 2023 Thessaloniki International Fair.
