A continuous curved form organises classrooms, shared interior spaces and the courtyard into a calm, legible environment for early learning.
moreThe 23rd Public Kindergarten of Nea Ionia is a new two-class all-day public kindergarten located on a compact urban plot in the municipality of Nea Ionia, Attica. The site occupies a block with neighbouring public green and play areas contributing to the wider educational setting.
The architectural proposal responds to the need for a contemporary ground-level school within a constrained urban site. A continuous curved line defines the building envelope and becomes the main organising gesture of the project, giving the kindergarten a soft, recognisable form while supporting a clear internal layout.
The main entrance is located on Sagalassou street and is approached through an accessible outdoor ramp. Inside, the programme is arranged around the multipurpose hall, which acts as the central shared space of the school. The classrooms are placed to benefit from southern orientation and open directly towards the courtyard, allowing educational activities to extend naturally outdoors.
The design combines white curved volumes, a distinct exposed concrete element at the entrance, planted outdoor areas and a green roof. Photovoltaic panels and mechanical equipment are integrated at roof level, while the landscape design supports a higher quality microenvironment for children, teachers and the surrounding neighbourhood.
EB/Architects developed the project from concept to construction documentation, including architectural design, interior design, landscape design and BIM-based coordination.
Presented through virtual reality at the KTYP pavilion during the 2023 Thessaloniki International Fair, the project used immersive visualization to communicate spatial quality, scale and the relationship between classrooms, courtyard and landscape.
