Concept Design for the Iconic Umm Lafina Bridge

Umm Lafina Bridge is part of the new connection from the Umm Lafina Link Road to the Reem Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

EB/Architects' scope was to provide the design of the iconic bridge as a competition entry for Ghantoot Transport & Gen. Cont. L.L.C. (Roads Division) who was bidding for 'Contract 2' of the road which is dealing with the section from Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Street to the south Umm Lafina Island.

The selected concept introduced a double parabolic arch cable-stayed bridge. The arches are crossing close to the center of the bridge and are founded on the bottom of the canal. The deck is hung from the arches with cables which are tied on both sides of the roadbed. The total length of the bridge is 135m, which is separated in 3 smaller spans. The highest spot of the bridge is 43.25m.

4 more concepts were developed and presented, each one with a distinctive character and identity:

  • A tied-arch bridge consisting of two unbraced arches, which rest on foundations on both sides of the deck.
  • A truss-type bridge consisting of two braced bowstring arches. The truss carries the roadbed at the bottom.
  • A girder bridge supported by two columns founded at the bottom of canal. The columns are consisted of metal tube sections, inspired by the morphology of mangroves, dominant plants of the Umm Lafina area.
  • A truss-type bridge consisting of two braced bowstring arches, also inspired by the mangrove forest.
