Carmen Herrera at Lisson Gallery NY

Astonishingly, this Cuban-born geometric abstractionist recently turned 101 and is still going strong—as these paintings completed over the last two years attest. When Herrera came to New York in 1954, her hard-edge style was out of step with the prevailing Abstract Expressionist aesthetic of the time. She labored in obscurity for decades, working out of the same studio she’s lived in since her arrival. Discovered late in her career, Herrera is now considered an important precusor of Minimalist art. This show in Lisson Gallery NY, might be considered an appetizer for her forthcoming retrospective at the Whitney Museum NYC, in September.
